Jio GigaFiber may not launch anytime soon, free Preview offer to be available for almost one year
This is the month when the Jio GigaFiber is supposed to launch at the Reliance AGM. But for now, there is no clarity on Jio plans with people who are installing Jio GigaFiber Preview connections hinting that it may remain free for nearly a year.
- Jio GigaFiber may take up to one year before it launches commercially.
- GigaFiber will be available under the Preview offer in two plans with no monthly rental charges.
- Rumours suggest Jio GigaFiber may launch during the AGM 2019 event.
While Jio GigaFiber is available in a lot of areas as part of Preview offer, which gives users a choice between 100Mbps and 50Mbps connection, there is a lot of confusion about its commercial availability. You see currently the Jio GigaFiber is available for free, with security fee of either Rs 4500 or Rs 2500 depending on whether you want speed of Rs 100mbps or 50mbps. But if you want to know when Jio GigaFiber will be available commercially, there is no official information so far. Earlier indications were that the official Jio GigaFiber launch would be in July at Reliance Annual General Meeting but now there are hints that this may not be the case.
There have been rumours that Jio GigaFiber may be launching within a few weeks. It is expected that Reliance will announce the commercial services of GigaFiber at its next Annual General Meeting event -- an event where Reliance announces new services and products every year. It is expected to be around July 20. Since GigaFiber has been around for almost a year now, it is expected that Reliance may announce the commercial availability of GigaFiber very soon, which in simple words means that we may get to know how much will it cost.
However, over here at the India Today Tech, we have learnt from service engineers responsible for installing new GigaFiber connections under the Preview offer that the official launch of the service may not happen anytime soon. On condition of anonymity, the person told the India Today Tech that GigaFiber would continue to be free for nearly one more year as part of the Preview offer because the official launch is not expected this year.
It seems that Jio is fine-tuning its infrastructure for GigaFiber's commercial launch and it may take the company another year before it could make the Jio GigaFiber market-ready and bring it to consumers with monthly or annual subscription plans.
We have reached out to Jio for clarification on the launch date or time-frame for the GigaFiber and will update this copy when we hear back.
What do make of this information? Be skeptical. While Jio has not commented officially, we have also seen that the company usually doesn't talk about launch details of a service or before unveiling it. However, it is also important to note that the Reliance AGM may take place soon, and if Jio is indeed launching GigaFiber at the event, by now its engineers on the ground must have been aware of it.
Or maybe, Jio GigaFiber will launch this month but in a very limited way and only in few areas. So, wait and watch.
As we had reported earlier, Jio has now started offering a cheaper way to subscribe to the GigaFiber under its Preview offer. Consumers can now pay a refundable security deposit of Rs 2,500 and get free access to GigaFiber's service. The plan will offer a single-band Wi-Fi router with speeds of up to 50Mbps and will bundle up to 1100GB data per month.
The connection will also offer a landline connection with free voice calls but the subscriber needs to buy a landline phone set separately in order to avail it. For now, there's no information about the Jio Home TV service.
At the moment, Jio hasn't commented anything on this officially and is still offering GigaFiber under the Preview offer.
